Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne Sportive
Ride the first sportive of the year: the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne Cyclo. This event marks the start of the Flemish cycling season.
Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne Cyclo takes place the day before the pro race. In 2013 the pro race was cancelled due to bad weather. Nonetheless more than 2000 amateur cyclists rode the cyclo with temperatures of -4° C, sure to prove everyone they were real Flandriens.
Bearing in mind it’s the beginning of the season, you can choose for a ride of 55, 85, 100 or 125km. The cyclo takes you through the typically Flemish countryside. You’ll have to climb some hills such as the Kwaremont, Tiegemberg and Nokereberg. It wouldn’t be a Flemish cyclo if you didn’t had to face some cobblestones. Therefore the 100km ride takes you to the 2km long Varent, a cobblestone section also known from the Ronde van Vlaanderen. The finish line is the same as for the pro riders the next day. During the race there are two extensive provisions (one for the 55km). Off course a real Flemish cyclo doesn’t end at the finish. In the meeting point you can discuss your race enjoying a famous Belgian beer. Yeah, you can even drink a Kwaremont . Hope it doesn’t feels so hard as it’s cobblestoned brother.
Tip: combine it with watching the Omloop het Nieuwsblad in the afternoon.
